Student Brawls

             Nowadays, there are many student brawls that happened in Indonesia, especially Jakarta. The number of students brawl has been increasing from year-to-year according to some research. The Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) recorded that at least 128 school brawl cases in 2010, which rose to 339 last year.  This student brawl has taken 82 lives last year, an increase from 40 in 2010. The reasons why many students make this action are sometimes because their school has a long story of brawling. Like two of senior high school in South Jakarta, SMAN 70 and SMAN 6, they fought each other with no main reasons. They fought only because they have a long story of brawling between their schools. The recently case that happens between them just happened last September. The brawl killed 15 years old student, Alawy, from SMAN 6 but the eyewitness said that Alawy not killed by the brawl but he was killed by one of SMAN 70 student, FR. From the psychological test the FR takes, the psychologist assume that his aggressiveness may be influenced by a negative environment.  

            

              I think it is reasonable to assume that home environment plays a significant role in the development of a child`s character so they are not afraid to do this kind of action and they are easily get emotional just because a little things that actually not a good reasons for them to do that certain kind of things. Student brawls, therefore, might be comes from parental alcoholism, domestic violence, and physical abuse of children. Such things teach them that criminal and violent activities are acceptable. Also, think that harsh parental discipline leads to a higher level of aggressiveness in children. Neighborhoods with drug addicts and high crime rates also contribute to violent behavior, which is then exhibited at schools.

             In my opinion the government should give more attention about this problem because the number of students brawl would be increasing every year and there could be more victims that come from the action. I think the character education can be the answer for solving this student brawl problems. By this kind of education the teachers can build their students personalities so they are not easily responding certain kind of problems by doing violent like for examples student brawl.  The education for parents I think is also necessary to decreasing the number of student brawl that happens recently because environment is one of the main reasons that lead a student’s mentality.
